Welcome to our Timeline page dedicated to the rich history of Oakville. Although Oakville officially amalgamated with Trafalgar Township in 1962, the area has a fascinating history that dates back much further. European and American settlers began arriving in the early 1800s. Still, before that, the area was originally home to Indigenous Peoples who practiced agriculture, hunted, fished, and traded in the region until 1847.
The area that is now Oakville was once made up of various villages and hamlets. These included Palermo, Omagh, Drumquin, Postville, Boyne, Ash, Bronte, Glenorchy, Hornby, Merton, Munn's Corner, Proudfoot Hollow, and Sheridan, all of which had shared resources and traded with each other over the years, making their histories intertwined and linked together. |
To help you understand Oakville's rich and diverse history, we have created a timeline of important events and interesting facts that took place before the amalgamation (and a few after). This timeline is a "living document" that will continue evolving and growing. We encourage you to explore this timeline and share your comments and feedback with us as we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of modern-day Oakville's history.
We are immensely grateful to all the individuals and organizations who have contributed to the creation of this timeline, especially those who are not members of the Oakville Historical Society.
