Become a Member and Volunteer!
Membership and volunteer activities are essential to the important role we play in the preservation and telling the story of Oakville's past. Members and volunteers quickly become aware of our community's interesting place in the history of Canada; for instance our part in the rescue of slaves via the Underground Railroad, the characters who helped shape our town and the rapid growth and wealth of our early settlement and the varied industry that began at the harbour nearly two hundred years ago.
Come and find out for yourself. You don't have to be a member to visit our office or the Thomas House to look at our archives and artifacts, but for a small annual fee you can support the work of the Society.
Membership (and the associated fees!) are very important in supporting our totally volunteer efforts. Members have access to our historical and marine library, our quarterly newsletter, historical lectures and attendance at social events. As well you will be entitled to discounts on historic publications.
While you can certainly become a member without being a volunteer (there are many more members than volunteers!), becoming a Society Volunteer is almost guaranteed to provide you with many new and surprising insights into your community's past, be it from dealing directly with a public that is very interested in the subject or working together with other volunteers in organizing, expanding and exhibiting our historical heritage collections. Volunteers of all ages are more than welcome, and the list of volunteer possibilities is extensive (see below). At the same time, volunteering makes possible the critical role the Society plays in the community's heritage arena: the Society is managed and operated entirely by volunteers. Without them, it couldn't function. As one tiny example out of hundreds, this website has been created entirely by volunteers, at zero cost to the Society or its members/sponsors.
