Hello,
I am Master Warrant Officer Gabriel McQueen, the Regimental Sergeant Major of 1188 RCACC of the year 2019-2020. As RSM, my responsibility is to lead 1188 with 70 cadets consistently attending each week. With my time being a dedicated cadet nearing an end, I am looking forward to the next steps of my career as a post-secondary student in chemical engineering. I am committed to making a positive difference in this world and it would be an honor to have your support in my dreams. To have your support with this bursary, I would be able to pay off fees as a student and have more resources at my disposal to pursue my education as a chemical engineer.
In the past years, I have earned many accomplishments that have made me a better and wiser person. I have developed a strong sense of discipline in my courses of basic and instructor drill and ceremonial, 3 weeks and 6 weeks respectively. For 6 weeks, the Leadership and Challenge Course in Alberta has strengthened the foundation of my leadership and pushed me beyond my limits, which has given me the opportunity to have a positive mindset towards hardships. My 10 day Northern Extreme Regional Expedition in February 2019 put myself and my team in harsh environments. We learned to keep our heads up through the freezing training, teaching me to have a strong mind and patience in lasting hardships. This past summer, I staffed Blackdown CTC as Company Sergeant Major, in command of 180 cadets. This experience of staffing matured my leadership, responsibility, persistence, and dedication towards my commitments at hand as I worked with the people around me for 7 weeks. That summer I was awarded the Order of St. George, one of the highest decorated medals for leadership.
In my personal life, I have the same dedication towards my academics as I do with cadets, being awarded honor roll every year through high school. I have always put in my most in making the community I live in better. I have submitted 104 community service hours, constructed a basic training program for my cadet corps, and I have been a key member at Harvey’s, my work for over 2 years. With all of my commitments, I consistently have worked every day to improve myself and the environments I work and live in.
In conclusion, I, Gabriel McQueen, would be greatly honored to be awarded this bursary for my post-secondary education as I would be productive with it and become a contributing member to society. I believe the accomplishments I have earned and the skills I have developed would have you consider me as a promising candidate for this bursary.
Yours Sincerely,
Gabriel

Each year we dedicate our bursary in the name of a member of the Society. This year we're very pleased to dedicate it in memory of Harry and Margaret Buxton who were long-time volunteers with the Society. They met in Montreal during the Second War when Harry, an RAF officer, was in Canada for pilot training as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Margaret was a stores corporal with the CWAC (Canadian Women's Army Corps). Harry flew PBY Catalina Flying Boats in the Caribbean for a while before switching to Ferry Command where he delivered Lancaster Bombers built in Canada to places all over the world. After the war he took a degree in Chemistry at Cambridge and they ended up in Oakville where he worked for Shell. Together they 9 children, 29 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. In 2009 they were awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award. Harry was President of the Society for several years and was a mentor to me when I took over as President. He passed away in 2011. Margaret was the Society Archivist for several years and passed away in 2015. They would both be delighted that the Society is presenting this bursary in their name.
I'm very pleased to announce on behalf of the Oakville Historical Society that you are this year's recipient of our bursary in the amount of $500. Unfortunately, because of the Covid-19 virus, we are unable to host a presentation event at this time but would like to do so at a later date. Our Treasurer, Mark Verlinden, will be sending you a cheque which will assist you in your studies at Queen's in the fall.
On behalf of the Society, our best wishes for your studies in the fall.
Regards,
George Chisholm, CD, BES, BEd, UE
President
Oakville Historical Society.
