We are proud to host esteemed author Plum Johnson at our next Speaker's Night! She will speak about her memoir, They Left Us Everything, a touching story of loss and legacies in Oakville.

After almost twenty years of caring for elderly parents—first for their senile father,  and then for their cantankerous ninety-three-year-old mother—author Plum Johnson  and her three younger brothers experience conflicted feelings of grief and relief when  their mother, the surviving parent, dies. Now they must empty and sell the beloved family home, which hasn’t been de-cluttered in more than half a century. Twenty-three rooms bulge with history, antiques, and oxygen tanks. Plum remembers her loving but difficult parents who could not have been more different.

Johnson won the 2015 RBC Taylor Prize for this book published by Penguin Canada.

Join us for what promises to be a wonderfully moving evening with a great speaker!

Jim & Sue Waddington – Present “In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven”
Experience second hand, a 36 year journey of discovery. They were determined to locate, document, and photograph the actual landscapes that inspired the artists. This required tracking down clues, deciphering bits of information, tracing ancient portage routes, and exploring hidden inlets — all with the purpose of finding the very spots that gave birth to the work of the Group of Seven.

In presenting reproductions of the original paintings and contemporary photographs of the locations where the original works were created, the Waddingtons invite us to come face to face with the elusive muses that enlightened and enriched this renowned group of artists.

Dr. Dustin Galer will present the many various ways of preserving your or your family’s memories. These can be from photographs, recordings, movies, interviews, postcards and so much more.

See a video by the
Association of Personal Historians. (Before viewing, you may want to have a tissue box near by.)

Dr. Galer helps people capture their life stories so they can be shared with others. Often people are worried they or a loved one will forget their personal or family stories. They'd love to have a history of their lives, but they don't have the time or know how to do it themselves. Sadly, unless these stories are memorialized in a format that is easy to pass along, they can be easily forgotten. Organizes and edits stories to produce a compelling audio recording with background music or a beautiful published book people can share with family and friends.
